Google Renames Bard, Its AI Chatbot, “Gemini”

Google declared on Thursday that it had changed the name of Bard, an AI chatbot and assistant, to “Gemini” to standardize its generative AI branding across all of its current and upcoming projects.

With time, Gemini will become more than just the model. In a blog post, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated, “It supports an entire ecosystem — from the products that billions of people use every day to the APIs and platforms helping developers and businesses innovate.”

Gemini AI

Bard is being rebranded as Gemini, according to Pichai, to “reflect the advanced tech at its core.” It will continue to run on the Gemini Pro AI paradigm and be accessible online in more than 230 countries and territories, supporting more than 40 languages.

For those who don’t know, the search giant introduced Gemini, its next-generation multimodal generative AI model, in December 2023. Gemini will power services such as Duet AI and Bard AI. It is the “largest and most capable” large language model (LLM) the company has ever constructed. Gemini has powered Google Bard ever since its introduction.

Gemini is available in three distinct sizes: Gemini Nano, which is the most effective model for on-device tasks; Gemini Pro, which is the greatest model for scaling over a wide range of jobs; and Gemini Ultra, which is the largest and most competent model for highly complicated tasks.

Expanding upon the rebranding, Google is now offering two new experiences, a mobile app and Gemini Advanced, to make it easier for users to work together with the finest features of Google AI and to rival Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Users will first have access to Ultra 1.0, the company’s largest and most advanced AI model, through Gemini Advanced. Ultra 1.0 is significantly more adept at very complicated jobs including coding, logical reasoning, following subtle instructions, and working with others on creative projects.

The Plans

Google users can sign up for the new Google One AI Premium plan, which starts with a free two-month trial, and pay $19.99 per month to access Gemini Advanced. Users who choose this package will have access to Ultra 1.0, 2TB of storage, and all of Google’s most recent innovations.

Gemini Advanced is currently accessible in English in more than 150 countries and territories, and additional languages will likely be added soon. Go here to learn more about Gemini Advanced.

Mobile Experience

Turning now to the mobile experience, Google has released a new software for Android users called Gemini and Gemini Advanced, which is available for download from the Google Play Store. Gemini is also available to Android users via Google Assistant, which is activated by a prolonged home button press.

The company continues, “You can take a picture of your flat tire and ask for instructions, generate a custom image for your dinner party invitation, or ask for help writing a difficult text message with Gemini on your phone. You can type, talk, or add an image for all kinds of help while you’re on the go.”

In the upcoming weeks, Google says it will begin to make Gemini available to iOS users through the official Google app.
